Box of the Month: Night Country Limited Edition Slipcase

Since the earliest days of the written word, language and images have been inseparable. The most ancient examples of writing, such as cuneiform and hieroglyphics, rely heavily, if not exclusively, on images. From ancient Japan to the current day, artists will incorporate text into their work. And there’s no denying the appeal of cover art on a book.

Some books take the concept to a new level, including not just spectacular cover art, but detailed illustrations that lend atmospheric presence to the story. That’s what happened when Lividian Publications produced a special, limited edition of Stewart O’Nan’s “strange and unsettling ghost story,” The Night Country.

Teaming up with illustrator François Vaillancourt, the special edition of this book featured a full-color, wrap-around dust jacket painting, as well as eleven original black and white illustrations. With an exclusive new introduction from the author, a new afterword by Paul Tremblay, gorgeous art from Vaillancourt, carefully selected details, and a limited run of only 750 copies, Lividian wanted to explore the possibilities something unique and exciting for a slipcase.

Pusterla US was happy to explore those possibilities with Lividian. The goal was to produce a limited edition slipcase that would complement the story and book design while also giving the artwork a chance to shine. Ultimately, Pusterla US and Lividian settled on a custom design with a hot foil stamp that mimics the book’s dust jacket illustration and includes a die-cut window that shows off Vaillancourt’s art. The unique die-cut window also adds that extra special touch making this limited edition also a special edition.

Lividian’s founder, Brian James Freeman, points out that “there are only so many different things you can do with a book slipcase to make it visually interesting, and this has added an attractive new characteristic to our collectible books.”

The limited edition slipcase is made with Eska board and black antique liner from Ecological Fibers. LBS supplied the rebel charcoal wrap, and the copper hot stamp foil is from General Roll Leaf.

We look forward to working with Lividian Publications again to create interesting and fun packaging for the beautiful volumes they produce.
