Hello, I’m Ken Byrne, Senior Design Engineer here at Taylor Box. For over 30 years, I’ve been responsible for the structural design of thousands of packaging projects, including many award-winning pieces.
My responsibilities, however, start before design even begins. I consult with the sales team about their clients’ requests to recommend suitable box styles, materials, and decorations. Then I consult with the Production team to verify construction capabilities and resource availability. I will contact suppliers for material costs and delivery times and then write up specifications for the project to be quoted. Once the client agrees, I produce a sample for the client to approve or make changes. Once approved, I work with our die-cutting and stamping plate vendors to order all the plates and cutting dies we’ll need for production. I review all artwork and proofs before print. And if that wasn’t enough – I work with the Marketing department as a resource and subject matter expert for content, promotional projects, webinars, and events.
As a RISD graduate with a BA in art and a BA in architecture, my education gave me the foundation I needed to understand creative and structural packaging design. When I began my tenure, I had no idea that I would become a subject matter expert in Packaging Design. I love seeing all my designs come to life in the factory, especially when they exceed expectations.
It’s a gratifying feeling. One of my proudest moments was traveling to Chicago to accept the Benny Award from Printing Industries of America. It was the company’s first Benny and a great honor to win such a prestigious award.
If there would be one piece of advice I would provide to our customers before working with Taylor Box, the clearer they are about their project goals, the more our team can meet or exceed those expectations. That does not mean you have to know how to design a box or what materials to use – but having the products, the goals, and the budget is very beneficial and will reduce design and manufacturing time and costs.
When I’m not at Taylor Box, I enjoy Gardening, Walking, Reading, Brit Coms, Dramas, and hanging out with Felix, my cat.
