Powell’s Indiespensable literary subscription club is designed for the dedicated reader. Their curation team selects the best new literary fiction, with a special emphasis on independent publishers.

One recent box featured American novelist Colson Whitehead’s 2020 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Nickel Boys. Whitehead’s novel was inspired by real-life accounts of the children sent to the Arthur G. Dozier Reform School for Boys in Marianna, Florida. Established in 1900, Dozier had a long history of racially motivated violence against children, including homicide. It was finally closed in 2011.
The story focuses on two Black teenagers, Elwood and Jack. Unjustly convicted of minor crimes, Elwood and Jack find themselves at Dozier, and in the hands of violent criminals — the staff.

Michelle Carroll, Powell's Books
The premium custom slipcase for books protects the limited-edition book, while the design entices shoppers and recipients to read more about lies within its pages. To provide a sense of intrigue for The Nickel Boys, we focused the design on heavy shadows, using a two-color foil stamping to mimic the book's graphics.
Constructed with a recycled Black Chipboard from Newman Paperboard, the slipcase is wrapped in Multicolor Vanilla by premium paper manufacturer Neenah.
The black and red foil stamping was completed in-house by our Master Foil Technician Ron Pontbriant, who ensures every print is as precise as the machines can get with the foil and the materials.
Like Powell’s, Pusterla is a third-generation-owned company that wants to provide its customers with customized quality products that they will love and cherish for a long time; but most importantly, we want our customers to have an experience that is unique and memorable.
